GMDA has completed around 95% of the work on the 4.5-km Leg 4 stormwater drain along SPR. The drain, being built parallel to NH-48, will carry up to 1,400 cusecs of rainwater and improve the city's drainage system. Officials said the project is expected to be ready this month, helping reduce waterlogging during the monsoon.
Gurugram: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to complete the construction of the 4.5-km-long Leg 4 stormwater drain along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) by June 15, ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. According to GMDA officials, around 95% of the work has already been completed, and the remaining work is being carried out on a priority basis.
The new drainage project is expected to play a major role in improving Gurugram’s stormwater management system and reducing waterlogging in several vulnerable areas during heavy rainfall.
The Leg 4 drain is being developed parallel to National Highway-48, stretching from Vatika Chowk to NH-48. The drain is around 9 metres wide, 3 metres deep, and has a carrying capacity of 1,400 cusecs, making it a key part of the city's drainage network.
Once operational, the drain will help reduce the load on the existing Badshahpur Drain (Leg 3). Officials said that excess rainwater can be diverted from Leg 3 to Leg 4 through a gate system whenever required. This will help prevent overflow and improve drainage in nearby areas that frequently experience waterlogging during the monsoon.
To ensure timely completion of the project, GMDA Chief Executive Officer PC Meena recently conducted a field inspection of the Leg 4 drain and other ongoing drainage works across the city.
The review comes just before the visit of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to Gurugram. Meanwhile, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar has also directed GMDA to plan a larger drainage network that can carry stormwater from Gurugram to the Yamuna through Sohna, Nuh, and Palwal.
During the inspection, Meena also reviewed the construction of a new drain near Tau Devi Lal Stadium. Officials informed him that this project is also expected to be completed by June 15. The new drain will help reduce waterlogging around the Medanta underpass and nearby roads, which often face flooding during heavy rain.
Additionally, GMDA is developing a system to channel rainwater collected near NH-48 directly into Leg 3 from the outskirts of Khandsa village.
The authority is also constructing three underground barrels near Narsinghpur using advanced trenchless technology. These structures will improve the flow of stormwater without disrupting traffic on NH-48.
In Sector 37D, GMDA has directed officials to speed up the construction of a drain junction before the monsoon begins. According to PC Meena, the authority is focused on completing all major drainage projects on time so that residents can avoid waterlogging and travel disruptions during the rainy season.
With several key projects nearing completion, GMDA aims to strengthen Gurugram’s drainage infrastructure and provide better relief from monsoon-related flooding this year.
